Payday now every other Friday for thousands of state workers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Nine-thousand state workers will be paid out of the Oasis payroll system for the first time Friday. The system changes the pay periods from twice a month to every other week.

State Auditor Glen Gainer said the Oasis operating system is expected to save the state $300 million over 10 years by increasing efficiency along many financial avenues in state government. One of those is changing payroll from bimonthly to biweekly.

“Payday will be every other Friday and any time you can standardize business processes—it’s the same thing every single week–it saves money in work processes and work flow,” Gainer said.

The workers getting paid under the new system Friday represent approximately one-third of state workers. Gainer said the other two-thirds will see the change before the end of the year.

Under the new system workers will receive 26 pays a year instead of 24.

“Their net check will be less because it is a 1/26th of their pay instead of a 1/24th, so they will notice that. It’s about 7.69 percent (less),” Gainer said. “But you’ll have two months every year that employees will actually receive three paychecks during the course of a month. You get no more money it’s just your pay is spread out over 26 pays instead of 24.”

Gainer said workers he’s spoken with are looking forward to the change.

“They know every other Friday they receive a paycheck,” he said under the old system employees would sometimes go three weekends without getting a paid.

Wave 1 to see the change Friday includes employees in the Governor’s Office, the State Auditor’s Office, the State Treasurer’s Office, the ERP Board, the Department of Administration (all departments except Child Health Insurance Agency), the Division of Natural Resources, Department of Agriculture and the Department of Transportation (all departments except Parkways).
