Wesco aiming to become nasty blocker, big-time target at Lackawanna

MORGATOWN, W.Va. — Trevon Wesco’s first junior college season at Lackawanna was about learning the tight end position and growing into it.

“I went there and they put 40 pounds on me,” the recent West Virginia commitment told Metronews “Sportsline” during a guest appearance. “I went from 220 to 260 now.”

A standout receiver and quarterback at Musselman High, where he also starred on the basketball team, the 6-foot-5 Wesco admitted he wasn’t into serious weightlifting. After poor grades forced him to attend Lackawanna, Wesco wasn’t sure what type of Division I interest he would draw. Even after a modest five-catch freshman season in which he was a backup, several Power Five programs took notice.

His home-state Mountaineers made an obvious impression. After all, Wesco attended his first WVU game when he was 7 years old.

Now he aims to make the WVU coaches happy by developing into a multidimensional tight end as a juco sophomore.

“I had to learn how to block, but I’ll do whatever,” he said. “This spring semester I had to make myself love to block because that’s what I’m going to have to do to be great at the position. To block someone that’s 300 pounds you’ve got to be nasty.”

With Cody Clay entering his senior season, the faster and more athletic Wesco could become an immediate contributor in 2016. WVU coaches like the potential for him to become more of a downfield target than previous tight ends.

“They’d like to use me as a vertical threat, because I can catch and run after the catch,” said Wesco, who returns to Lackawanna in August. “I’m hoping to have a big season and make my mark, because I’m still an unknown right now.”
