Ranking the best championship games of 2014-2015

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — With the 2014-2015 high school athletic year in the books, let’s look back at the best championship games from the season. To keep the list to just 12 games, the games ranked are from football, boys and girls basketball and baseball (all the title games broadcast live by MetroNews).

RANK 2014-2015 WEST VIRGINIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES
CLASS A FOOTBALL TITLE
1 WILLIAMSTOWN 33, ST. MARYS 32 (3OT)

ALL-TIME CLASSIC, WILLIAMSTOWN CLAIMS CLASS A TITLE IN TRIPLE-OVERTIMEThe headline, alone, is enough to put this game in the top spot. Williamstown erased a 20-0 deficit, blocked a potential game-winning St. Marys extra point and stuffed the Blue Devils’ two-point try at the end of the third-overtime. Yellow Jackets QB Dakota Watson anchored the comeback for the Yellowjackets, finishing with 116 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He also completed 4 of 12 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown in the win.
 CLASS AA BOYS BASKETBALL TITLE
2 POCA 57, FAIRMONT SENIOR 53

PERFECT ENDING: POCA BECOMES FIRST UNBEATEN BOYS CHAMP IN 28 YEARSThere were storylines galore in the final piece to Poca’s 27-0 season. The Dots trailed by 16 points in the second quarter, but chipped away to set up a flurry of late-game dramatics. Poca brothers Noah and Luke Frampton, meanwhile, were also playing in memory of their late-father who guaranteed they would win a title together.
  CLASS AAA BOYS BASKETBALL TITLE
3 HUNTINGTON 53, PARKERSBURG SOUTH 50

AAA REPEAT: HUNTINGTON EDGES PARKERSBURG SOUTH FOR 2ND STRAIGHT TITLE – Tavian Dunn-Martin scored 23 points on 7-of-18 shooting as the Highlanders won their second straight title. Down three with just 1.5 seconds to go, Parkersburg South’s Garrett Gilkeson was forced into a contested 3 that was off the mark.
 CLASS AAA BASEBALL TITLE
4 JEFFERSON 2, NITRO 1

JEFFERSON CAPTURES 11TH TITLE, EDGES NITRO – You couldn’t ask for a much better AAA championship than powers Jefferson vs. Nitro. It was the ultimate pitching battle between the Cougars’ Brad Davis and Nitro senior Kipp Brewer — and both delivered. Ultimately, Jefferson won its 11th title, taking advantage of two Nitro errors in the first inning.
  CLASS AA GIRLS BASKETBALL TITLE
5 SISSONVILLE 50, FAIRMONT SENIOR 47

GIANT KILLERS: FOURTH-SEEDED SISSONVILLE WINS FIRST GIRLS TITLE SINCE 2003 – Sissonville had a dramatic run to its girls basketball championship, following an upset of top seed Wyoming East with a title win over two-seed Fairmont Senior. The undersized, scrappy Indians won the rebounding battle 38-35. Fairmont Senior erased a 10-point deficit with six minutes left and almost completed the comeback, closing to within a point and under a minute to go. A final heave down-court in the final second fell short as time expired for the Polar Bears.
   CLASS A BOYS BASKETBALL TITLE
6 MAGNOLIA 51, WHEELING CENTRAL 46

NEW REIGN IN CLASS A: MAGNOLIA CAPTURES CLASS A BASKETBALL TITLE – The Region 1 rivals became very familiar with one another, meeting in the championship game for what was the fourth time on the year. The Blue Eagles won the game that mattered 51-46 behind Preston Boswell’s 22 points and finished the year with three wins over the 2014 state champs. Magnolia was able to climb out of an an early 8-0 hole to get the win. It was Magnolia’s first title since 2003.
    CLASS A GIRLS BASKETBALL TITLE
7 ST. JOE 40, WHEELING CENTRAL 37

7TH HEAVEN: ST. JOE ADDS ANOTHER TITLE TO CLASS A DYNASTY – It wasn’t as dominant this time around, but St. Joseph Central added a seventh straight title with a 40-37 win over Wheeling Central.  Freshman Alexis Hall led St. Joe with 17 points, while Tyesha Taylor added 12 points — including a crucial five straight points with under three minutes to go to erase a one point deficit. The win was St. Joseph Central’s 85th straight win over an instate opponent.
  CLASS A BASEBALL TITLE
8 WAHAMA 7, MAN 0

WAHAMA RIDES HICKS AND STICKS TO LONG-AWAITED CLASS A CROWN: The 7-0 final score doesn’t indicate how close this game actually was through five innings. It was a pitching duel between Wahama’s Mason Hicks and Man’s Jake Adkins as Wahama scored the only run up to that point. The White Falcons finally broke the game open in the sixth, putting together six consecutive two-out hits and scoring six runs. Ricky Kearns led Wahama from the plate, going three for four with three RBIs. It was Wahama’s third baseball championship overall.
   CLASS AA BASEBALL TITLE
9 BRIDGEPORT 5, CHAPMANVILLE 0

JUST LIKE FOOTBALL: BRIDGEPORT WINS 2ND STRAIGHT AA BASEBALL TITLE – Bridgeport took control of the game from the get-go, scoring two runs off of Chapmanville ace Trey Dalton. Junior pitcher Jared Cleghorn led the Indians on the mound, throwing a complete-game two-hitter as Bridgeport won for the 37th time in 40 games on the 2015 campaign. Bridgeport became the first Class AA program to win back-to-back baseball titles since Winfield in 2001 and 2002.
 CLASS AAA FOOTBALL TITLE
10 CAPITAL 55, SOUTH CHARLESTON 15

BACK ON TOP: CAPITAL CRUISES OVER SOUTH CHARLESTON FOR AAA TITLE – South Charleston got on the board first, taking a 7-0 lead on a 47 yard touchdown pass. From that point on, it was all Cougars as Capital scored 55 unanswered points to eventually win its first title since 1995. Jordan Kinney collected 140 yards receiving and scored four touchdowns on six catches for the Cougars. The 40-point margin of victory was the most in Class AAA Super Six history.
  CLASS AA FOOTBALL TITLE
11 BRIDGEPORT 43, FRANKFORT 7

BACK-TO-BACK: BRIDGEPORT RETAINS AA TITLE WITH ROUT OF FRANKFORT – Bridgeport had little trouble in capturing its second straight football title as Dylan Tonkery scored on the game’s first play with a 73-yard run and Frankfort never recovered. Tonkery ran for 315 yards to set a Class AA Super Six rushing record. Bridgeport outgained Frankfort 426-148. The Falcons had just 52 rushing yards on 21 carries, playing in their first state championship game..
     CLASS AAA GIRLS BASKETBALL TITLE
12 MORGANTOWN 48, PARKERSBURG SOUTH 31

CHAMPS AGAIN: MORGANTOWN DOMINATES PARKERSBURG SOUTH FOR AAA TITLE – It was supposed to be a title game rematch from the year before that delivered intrigue and plenty of late game drama. Instead, it was all Morgantown from the get-go. The Mohigans led 23-8 at the half, while Parkersburg South missed 16 of its first 17 shots. Olivia Seggie finished with 15 points, while Sydney Holloway added 13 for the Mohigans as they won a second straight title
