SHINNSTON, W.Va. — Officials with the Shinnston Police Department are waiting on a report from the state Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death for a 14-year-old girl who was pulled from the Shinnston Pool Tuesday.
According to authorities, lifeguards had to rescue the teenager at approximately 2 p.m. and perform CPR. She was then reportedly transported by ambulance to United Hospital Center and then transferred to Ruby Memorial.
According to media reports, family members state she suffered from epilepsy and had a seizure in the pool.
The city released a statement Wednesday via Facebook.
“We at the City Office and Shinnston pool would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family involved….I ask that everyone please remember that our lifeguards are people as well and are grieving at this time. We feel it is appropriate to allow that to happen. In conjunction with that, we have made the decision that the Shinnston pool WILL NOT OPEN today and the family night event scheduled for this evening has been cancelled…We will not be making any additional statements at this time. Thank you for respecting the needs of the family and our employees.”
The pool is scheduled to reopen Thursday.
