KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. — A Charleston woman was killed when her vehicle rolled over her as she unloaded groceries early Wednesday.
Cynthia Adams, 49, apparently left her 2012 Nissan Rouge in gear when she began unloading her bags from the back of the vehicle around 1 a.m., according to Kanawha County sheriff’s reports.
Even though the engine was off, “the keys were still in the ignition, so the car was still moving,” said Sgt. Brian Humphreys.
“I think she thought it was stationary and I guess something started moving it, rolling it backwards. It rolled over her and dragged her down the sloped driveway.”
Humphreys called Adams’ death a “tragic accident.”
“It’s a good reminder to everybody to make sure to set the brake and ensure your vehicle is in park whenever you’re stopped,” Humphreys said. “Get the keys out. Don’t leave it running or make any assumptions.”
