MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia defensive lineman Kyle Rose sounded contrite Thursday while speaking to the media for the first since his April arrest for allegedly assaulting a police officer at a Morgantown bar.
“I think an apology is definitely needed to be said to the fans and my family,” Rose said. “That’s not how I was raised. That’s not the type of person I am.
“I’ve rededicated my life to football and not worrying about extracurricular activities. This is my last year with my brothers and I kind of let them down.”
A fifth-year senior who hadn’t encountered previous legal trouble, Rose reportedly had to be tased by police after scuffling with a bouncer at Bent Willie’s. The 6-foot-4, 295-pound lineman from Centerville, Ohio, was charged with a series of misdemeanors—public intoxication, disorderly conduct, obstructing an officer and battery on an officer.
His coach-inflicted punishment included cleaning the weight room, and Dana Holgorsen also had Rose sweeping stadium bleachers during a spring scrimmage.
“You can’t have seniors who make mistakes like that,” said Rose, a 20-game starter who’s currently a first-teamer at nose guard. “I want to be a face where a freshman walks in and says, ‘That’s Kyle Rose, he does things things right.’”
