ELKINS, W.Va. — A Girl Scout from Elkins is among the 13 with the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council who will be camping out with First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House this week.
The first-ever Girl Scout Campout will be held on the South Lawn Tuesday.
“I’m pretty excited,” Clare Talbott, a Girl Scout Junior and 5th grader at Third Ward Elementary School in Randolph County, told MetroNews of the trip.
She’s traveled with the Girl Scouts before now, but never to Washington, D.C. “All of them have been on West Virginia,” Talbott said. “I’ve been on a lot of trips, though.”
Talbott has been a member of the Girl Scouts for five years after starting out as a Daisy.
When she grows up, she wants to be some kind of scientist. “I’m just really into science and finding out what things do and why they do it,” Talbott said.
In addition to the 13 scouts and two adults with Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council, other participants will come from Central Maryland, the Virginia Skyline Council, Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma and Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capitol.
A day of events, tied to First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move Outside” initiative will be followed by a night of camping on June 30. The First Lady is the honorary national president for the Girl Scouts.
“We are very excited to be joining the First Lady in her mission to help children move outdoors,” said Beth Casey, CEO of Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council, in a statement.
Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council serves nearly 12,000 girls in 61 counties in West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio and Maryland.
