Rain likely to take part in opening round of Greenbrier Classic

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The golfers playing in the first two rounds of the Greenbrier Classic on Thursday and Friday may have to dodge raindrops.

A weak cold front is expected to stall out near the Greenbrier Valley, according to PGA Tour meteorologist Stewart Williams, who appeared Wednesday on MetroNews “Talkline.”

“There’s a fairly high chance of seeing showers and storms and rainfall could be heavy at timesm especially underneath the thunderstorms,” Williams said. “I think it’s going to be a challenge the next couple of days.”

The forecast for the final two rounds of the golf tournament was more promising.

“Hopefully this front will push a little further south and maybe allow a little drier air in here. You still probably have a 50 percent chance on Saturday and I’ve lowered it a little bit on Sunday,” he said. “You can’t totally take (the rain) out of the forecast.”

The thunderstorms will be difficult to time, Williams said, but most likely they will occur in the afternoons and evenings.

It wasn’t raining with Shaquille O’Neal teed off in Wednesday afternoon’s Pro-Am.

“I love people in West Virginia,” the former NBA star told reporters. “I love Mr. (Jim) Justice, he invited me down. It’s fun. The weather is great. The Greenbrier is a great property. I love to be here,” he said.
