DWI lands Harris on suspension at Michigan State

West Virginia transfer Eron Harris faces discipline at Michigan State after being charged with driving while intoxicated.

Former West Virginia guard Eron Harris has been suspended indefinitely by Michigan State coach Tom Izzo following last week’s arrest for driving while intoxicated.

The Lansing State Journal first reported the incident, which apparently means Harris, 21, will undergo some in-house discipline as he seeks to get back in Izzo’s good graces.

“Eron Harris has been suspended indefinitely from all basketball related activities,” Izzo said in a statement to the  Journal. “We hold our student-athletes to high standards, and the decisions that Eron made were irresponsible and unacceptable.

“Actions have consequences, and Eron must face those consequences in the legal system, in the court of public opinion, and within the program. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken as the legal system runs its course.”

Harris was arrested shortly before 2 a.m. on July 1, the same night he appeared in a local pro-am summer league.

Harris never encountered legal trouble at West Virginia, where he emerged as one of the Big 12’s best 3-point shooters in 2013-14 and averaged 17.4 points.

The 6-foot-4 junior guard, who sat out last season as a transfer, is projected to provide perimeter scoring for a Spartans squad stacked enough to contend for a Big Ten title.

The reviews regarding Harris’ acclimation year at Michigan State were positive, especially one from point guard Lourawls Nairn in April as MSU prepared for the Final Four:

“Special player, special player—I can’t wait to play with him. This kid, he gives 110 percent every single day, no matter what it is we do. And he knows he’s not suiting up, so he means a lot to the team. I think he’s helped us out a lot in terms of what he does in practice being tough to defend. Because I don’t think there’s another player like him in the Big Ten.”
