ALLOY, W.Va. — Three workers were injured in a flash fire Tuesday morning at the Elkem Metals plants in Fayette County.

The men, believed to be contract workers, were on the plant property in Alloy using a jackhammer when they struck an electrical line, Boomer Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Myers told MetroNews.

“They cut into an underground power source, which in turn caused a few transformers to explode, exposing them to to flash burning,” Myers said.

The men were conscious when firefighters got there at shortly after 11:30 a.m.

“None of them came in contact with the electricity itself,” Myers said. “The people involved were up walking around or sitting in the back of the ambulance when we arrived on the scene. There were mainly just burns, from the initial flash of cutting into the power source, to their arms and facial areas.”

Two of the injured workers were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. A third was taken by helicopter to burn unit at Cabell-Huntington Hospital.
