Victim’s ex-husband accused in fatal Fairmont shooting

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — A domestic dispute led to a fatal shooting in Fairmont.

Nancy Shaw, 62, was killed Thursday night by a single gunshot wound to the head.

Shaw’s ex-husband, Jeffrey Hovatter, 56, has been charged with murder.

Fairmont police were called to a house on the 800 block of 4th street for a domestic disturbance about 10:30 p.m.

Officers entered the home. Upon making their way upstairs, they heard a woman’s screams followed by two gun shots.

A perimeter was set up outside with several agencies including the Marion County SWAT team.

When investigators were able to safely enter the home, they found Hovatter still alive lying on the bedroom floor with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face.

He was arrested on murder charges on the way to Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Friday afternoon, Hovatter was listed in stable but critical condition.

Investigators indicated Shaw had been having problems with her ex-husband.

Nobody else was in the home at the time of the shooting.
