Former Herd assistant hospitalized

Phil Ratliff

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Former Marshall football All-American and assistant coach Phil Ratliff was hospitalized after suffering a cardiac event Monday night.

Ratliff is currently the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator with UNC Charlotte. The university released a statement Tuesday morning saying that Ratliff had been hospitalized but did not disclose any details.

The Lousia, Ky., native played for Marshall from 1989-1992 helping the Herd win its first D I-AA national championship. Ratliff was a two-time All-American for the Herd and is member of the Marshall University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Ratliff spent six seasons (2006-2011) on the Thundering Herd’s coaching staff as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator before moving to Charlotte to help launch the 49ers’ football program.

His coaching stops also include serving as defensive coordinator at Lawrence County (Ky.) High from 1994-99 and coach at Spring Valley (W.Va.) High from 2000-03.
