Mother and boyfriend sentenced in baby’s drowning

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The maximum sentence has been handed down for a mother and her boyfriend in Monongalia County after the baby drowned while in their care.

Sentenced to 1-5 years in prison.
Bankhead sentenced to 1-5 years in prison.
Kovach sentenced to 1-5 years in prison.
Kovach sentenced to 1-5 years in prison.

Tiffany Bankhead has been sentenced to one to five years in prison for child neglect creating substantial risk of injury. She pleaded to a lesser charge after initially being charged with child neglect resulting in death.

Gia, 1, drowned in summer 2013 while police say Bankhead and Kovach were under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol

Bankhead’s live-in boyfriend’s sentencing was Tuesday. He will also spend one to five years in prison for child neglect creating substantial risk of injury

When police responded to the home they shared, they found the baby had drowned in the bathtub and drug paraphernalia in the home along with wrappers for drugs used to treat opiods addictions.

Bankhead and Kovach were originally facing 15 years in prison on a charge of child neglect resulting in death.
