Students heading back to school in West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Summer vacation is ending for school students this week in parts of West Virginia.

By Monday morning, county schools were already open in Greenbrier, Wayne, Braxton and Kanawha counties with more school systems set to get started later in the week.

According to calendars provided to the state Board of Education, start dates for the 2015-2016 school year in West Virginia are as follows:

As of now, schools in Preston County will be the first to close on May 16, 2016 followed by Wetzel County on May 19, 2016 and Mingo County on May 20, 2016.

Those end dates could be adjusted, based on any winter weather or other emergencies requiring makeup days.

It was nearly the end of June before the 2014-2015 school year wrapped up in parts of West Virginia. The past school year was the first year a 180 instructional day mandate was enforced statewide.
