WVU’s Cogdell spoke with Geno Smith after sucker punch

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia assistant Damon Cogdell, having kept contact with Geno Smith since coaching him at Miramar (Fla.) High, spoke with the injured Jets quarterback after Tuesday’s bizarre locker room incident in New York.

Smith sustained a broken jaw courtesy of a sucker punch from reserve linebacker IK Enemkpali. With Smith expected to miss six to 10 weeks and veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick stepping in as the starter, Jets coach Todd Bowles said there’s no guarantee Smith will have the job upon returning.

“He told me he’d be back in Week 3,” Cogdell said Wednesday. “It was unfortunate, because he was doing well in camp. Hopefully he’ll bounce back.”

You can see what else Cogdell said about his conversation with Smith in the video above.
