Train derails in Marshall County

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — Five cars of a train hauling chemicals jumped the track in Marshall County early Thursday morning. The incident happened about 2:30 a.m. on the CSX line south of the Axial Plant but north of New Martinsville.

“We’re very fortunate there was no release and no spill,” said Tom Hart Director of Emergency Management in Marshall County. “And most importantly no injuries involved.”

The cars came off the rails but did not overturn.  The cause of the mishap is under investigation.

“There was no leak or no release of any product,” Hart said. “There was approximately five cars that had derailed on the CSX line just south of the plant.”

One of the tanker cars was empty, two carried chlorine, and the other two were hauling hydrochloric acid.  The train had just left the Axial plant where Hart believed the chlorine had been loaded, but was unsure where the hydrochloric acid had been brought on board.

Crews from Axial were on the scene with members of three Marshall County Volunteer Fire Departments arrived and had the incident under control.

Crews from CSX and Axial continued to off load the materials to other cars on Thursday and will place the cars back on the track before beginning inspections to determine a cause for the incident.
