I-64 tractor-trailer crash backs up traffic for most of Tuesday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A tractor-trailer crash late Monday night on I-64 East between Institute and Cross Lanes backed up traffic for nearly the entire day Tuesday.

The tractor spun 180 degrees out of control after hydroplaning and struck a guardrail, rolling down an embankment on its top, Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies said. The driver, Kevin Wagy, 41 of Sunbury, Oh., was trapped inside for a time. He was taken to CAMC General for an evaluation of his injuries.

The ammonia cartons that the truck was hauling spilled during the crash. The state DEP responded to help remove contaminated soil. A portion of the guardrail had to be replaced as well, deputies said.

Two lanes were closed for most of the day on Tuesday and the third lane remained closed into the evening.

The crash is still under investigation but no citations have been issued.
