MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — For the second year in a row, West Virginia coaches and staff members took on the men’s basketball team. And for the second time, they old guys took care of business.
Although the basketball players were able to chase down drives on defense, they couldn’t always match the ball to the glove, and sure outs turned to triples. (See the photo of a leaping Tarik Phillip. It’s not an error if it doesn’t touch the glove, right?)
Base-running errors proved costly, too, as players got caught between bases on fly-outs, or left too late and were forced out. Sophomore guard Daxter Miles Jr. was so focused on tagging from third on a fly out, that he forgot to tag from the actual base — getting doubled off easily.
Things didn’t get any better at the plate for the basketball team, either. Forward Nathan Adrian actually spun himself into the air while swinging, and he landed on his stomach at the plate. He managed to make contact on the swing, but may have been out before getting off of the turf.
The game raised funds for coach Bob Huggins’ charity cause, the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment.
