School year begins for all 55 W.Va. counties

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — Students in all 55 West Virginia counties are now in school.

Marshall County schools were the last to begin a new school year Thursday.

Summer vacation ended as early as Aug. 10 for students living in Greenbrier, Wayne, Braxton and Kanawha counties.

According to calendars provided to the state Board of Education, schools in Preston County will be the first to close on May 16, 2016 followed by Wetzel County on May 19, 2016 and Mingo County on May 20, 2016.

This is the second year 180 instructional days will be enforced statewide. School officials been working throughout the summer months to make sure they have enough flexibility for inclement weather.

End dates could be adjusted based on any emergencies requiring makeup days. The 2014-2015 school year wrapped up for most West Virginia counties toward the end of June this year.
