Charleston health care company forced to make 37 layoffs

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Charleston-area behavioral health care company has been forced to layoff 37 workers.

Process Strategies, which sits on Charleston’s West Side under the Patrick Street Bridge, has been suffering from financial losses for several years.

“We just could not sustain it any more for the organization,” Spokesman Jim Strawn said. “Most of all we wanted to restructure so we could continue to provide services to all of our patients.”

He said of the 37 layoffs, 26 were full time and 11 were as-needed part-time employees. The full-time employees would be given some help by the company in finding new positions.

“We’re giving them some preferential treatment in applying for positions that are currently open in our other Highland companies,” Strawn explained. “Highland Hospital, or Highland Health Center which is our detox substance abuse recovery unit. They can apply for those positions.

Stawn said that the decision was a tough one but one that the entire board and leadership agreed had to be made to continue to provide services.

“We just have experienced increasing and consistent financial losses that were not sustainable for the organization,” Strawn said.
