Steelworkers President reports progress in ArcelorMittal negotiations

WEIRTON, W.Va. — Contract talks between the United Steelworkers and ArcelorMittal continued despite the expiration of the old contract on September 1.  Union members remain on the job under the old contract as the negotiating teams from the two sides continue bargaining.

“Most of the major issues we have not been able to agree on have been health care related issues,” said Mark Glyptis, President of USW Local 2911. “Other issues revolve around investment back into the facilities and our retirement.”

Reinvesting is a relative new area of negotiation in the steel industry. Glyptis said getting some guarantees built into a contract on reinvestment is another way of paving the way for job security for members.

“We’re senior employees, many of us,” Glyptis said. “We’re seeing a new wave of employees coming in and we want to make sure they are protected with good security.”

About 14,000 ArcelorMittal employees are covered by the contract at 14 plants. The Weirton, W.Va. operation has about 950 of those workers.  Glyptis said he was very impressed with the workers’ bargaining team in the negotiations and the “out of the box” thinking which has bone into the talks.

“I feel we’re going to get there,” he said. “I’ve been doing this for a while and as long as you’re talking and you’re listening to each other, there isn’t any reason we can’t come up with an agreement.”
