LOGAN, W.Va. — Logan High School was placed on lockdown for 40 minutes Thursday afternoon and three students were arrested after police used pepper spray to control an unruly group.
The students were charged with obstructing an officer. They were released into the custody of their parents and will face juvenile hearings.
The incident started near the end of lunch outside the school where students were congregated and waiting for the bell. According to witnesses, students outside the building were playing loud music that contained the lyrics, “F*** the Cops.”
Sources said a boy refused a school administrator’s request to lower the volume. The Logan High School resource officer was called to the incident, which escalated when the group was brought into the school.
Witnesses said several students were chanting along with the music, “F*** the Cops!” when officers from the Logan Police Department arrived. As a confrontation with police developed inside the school, officers eventually used pepper spray to subdue the group.
A number of students were in the vicinity waiting for lunch to end. Witnesses said many students fled the area and ducked into nearby classrooms.
The lunch period ended early and students were sent to their next classes where they were placed on lockdown until 1:45 p.m.
School officials made no comment about the incident.
