Cleanup of Kanawha River the goal of volunteers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Close to 100 volunteers will gather at several locations along the Kanawha River Saturday for the 26th annual Great Kanawha River Cleanup.

Groups will meet in Fayette, Kanawha and Putnam counties, state Make It Shine Coordinator Terry Carrington said.

“Over the past years we’ve had 850 volunteers that have collected 38.5 tons of trash and debris,” he said.

The volunteers expect to collect plastic bottles, plastic grocery bags, tires and shopping carts. The cleanup will probably always be needed, Carrington said.

“It’s just human nature. Even if people didn’t actively, unthinkingly dispose of their rubbish improperly you are going to have weather events that can cause trash to blow out of garbage cans and car windows. Some of it is accidental, some intentional,” he said.

Cleanup sites include Winfield Beach, St. Albans Roadside Park, the South Charleston boat ramp, Magic Island in Charleston, and Kanawha Falls at Glen Ferris. The cleanup goes from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday.
