Harpers Ferry business ready to reopen after fire

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. Six weeks have gone by since fire destroyed four buildings in Harpers Ferry, displacing nine businesses.

Saturday one of those businesses will reopen. The Vintage Lady will reopen its doors on High Street, Cindi Dunn, who owns the shop with her husband, said.

The was never a doubt the store would reopen, Dunn said, because of the atmosphere in the historic community.

“The spirit of cooperation and friendship, not just among people downtown but people everywhere love Harpers Ferry,” Dunn said.

Meanwhile, Harpers Ferry Mayor Greg Vaughn has requested around $21,000 in relief funds from the Jefferson County Commission. Commissioners will vote on the request in their next meeting later this month.

There’s still no word on what started the fire. It’s officially listed as undetermined from the state Fire Marshal’s Office. Investigators do know where it started.

A second business is scheduled to reopen at a new location next month. The Vintage Lady reopening is just in time for what’s expected to be a busy Labor Day weekend.

“People love Harpers Ferry that’s the bottom line,” Dunn said.
