‘They were being disruptive’ police officer describes uproar at Logan High

LOGAN, W.Va. — Students at Logan High School returned to class Friday a day after a lockdown and a scuffle between several students and law enforcement. Four students were detained by police. Three were charged after the incident which started with unruly behavior.

“The students were being disruptive and trying to start an altercation in the hallway with the faculty,” said Sgt. Dave White of the Logan Police Department. “This happened during lunch. They were brought into an office and the rest of the kids were sent to their rooms.”

The incident apparently started when the students involved were playing loud music after lunch. The music contained profane lyrics about police officers. An administrator asked for the music be turned down. When they refused the incident escalated.

“They were being disruptive,” said White of what officers found when they arrived at the school. “They were screaming, yelling, kicking garbage cans and things like that.”

Once isolated in the office area the students continued to be disruptive and according to White became aggressive.

“Yeah, they continued to be argumentative and one of them even took a swing at one of the officers,” said White. “The individuals were detained and everything was brought under control.”

White confirmed officers used pepper spray on one of the boys. An officer’s glasses were broken in the scuffle.

Juvenile petitions were obtained on three of the boys and all four were released to the custody of their parents. The police investigation is ongoing. Police would not release the identities of the boys involved because all four are juveniles.

Logan County schools put out the following statement regarding the incident Friday afternoon.

“On Thursday, September 3, 2015, Logan High School was put on lockdown for a brief period of time after an incident occurred during the lunch hour. At Logan County Schools, student safety is our primary concern, so the lockdown was for precautionary measures and classes continued as normal.  We will be fully cooperating with law enforcement throughout the investigation of the incident.”

Calls to the school administration and the county superintendent’s office have not been returned.
