Teyvon Myers’ odds of playing this season looking up: Sources

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Sources within the West Virginia basketball program anticipate junior college transfer Teyvon Myers becoming eligible to play this season, though the NCAA has yet to clear him.

The Dominion Post first reported Monday that the 6-foot-2 combo guard had enrolled Aug. 28 and joined team workouts. That comes mere weeks after coach Bob Huggins suggested Myers’ arrival might be delayed until December, necessitating a redshirt year.

Combo guard Teyvon Myers of Williston (N.D.) State Community College shot 36 percent from 3-point range and 85 percent from the foul line.

The situation now appears more favorable for last season’s national scoring leader in the junior college ranks.

“He should be good to go, but you never know,” one source told MetroNews.

If the NCAA doesn’t grant Myers eligibility for the upcoming season, he could continue practicing with the team.

Myers put up 25 points per game last year at his North Dakota junior college, the kind of offense West Virginia could really use as it seeks to replace top scorer Juwan Staten.

With eight key returnees from a 25-win team, and four-star freshman forward Esa Ahmad joining the rotation, the Mountaineers figure to open the season in the top 25. Having Myers aboard would raise expectations even higher—possibly putting Huggins’ team in contention for a Big 12 title.

A 36-percent 3-point shooter who made 85 percent at the foul line as a sophomore, Myers’ ability to create shots would only help an offense that toiled in the halfcourt last season. The Mountaineers were second in the Big 12 in scoring but ranked last in 3-point shooting (31.6 percent), next to last in overall shooting (40.8 percent) and eighth in free-throw accuracy (66.2 percent).

Myers missed West Virginia’s three-game exhibition trip to the Bahamas and the 10 practices that preceded it.

“(Myers) isn’t in great shape right now, because he missed the summer conditioning, but he can catch up on that,” a source said. “He could help right away, because he can really score.”
