WVU files notice of intent to move programs from Montgomery to Beckley

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia Higher Education Chancellor Dr. Paul Hill told a legislative interim committee Monday WVU has submitted its notice of intent to move existing academic programs from WVU Tech in Montgomery to Beckley.

The HEPC will review and eventually vote on those proposals. Del. Dave Perry (D-Fayette) asked Hill for public hearings in connection with the moving of the academic programs.

WVU announced late last month its plans to move WVU Tech in two years. It filed its official intent back on Friday.

Del. Perry also asked Hill about a 2008 law that requires WVU Tech to have its headquarters in Montgomery. Hill said his staff attorney is reviewing the language in state code.

Perry quizzed Hill about the required review by the state Higher Education Policy Commission when institutions plan to move programs. Hill said there would be a full review of WVU’s plans.

“I can assure you this is a very important issue for the people of the 32nd (Delegate) District,” Perry said.

“I believe the Policy Commission will thoroughly study each academic proposal offered by WVU for its Beckley campus, with a particular focus on any potential statewide impact,” Hill previously said.
