Police determine heroin and alcohol caused deaths of three Mercer County men

MONTCALM, W.Va. — Police have determined that a combination of heroin and alcohol was the cause of death of three men found dead in a house in Montcalm in July.

Lesly Joe Hicks, 38, Joseph Dean Hicks, 52, and Ernest David Hicks, 57, were found dead in the kitchen by a neighbor at a Tabernacle Hill residence. Final autopsy reports showed all three men had consumed bad moonshine, beer, liquor and were under the influence of heroin.

The three men were family members, and their deaths were ruled accidental. There were no bullet wounds or evidence of trauma on any of the bodies. There was evidence of prior alcohol abuse from all three, police said.

Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputies continue to investigate who may have sold the men the drugs.
