New senior facility opens in Wyoming County

MULLENS, W.Va. — The new Council on Aging headquarters facility opened Monday for senior citizens living in Wyoming County.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the new 1,500 square foot building in Mullens.

“We have a huge dining hall. We have activity rooms, a computer lab, an exercise facility, a library,” said Jennifer Gibson, the executive director of Council on Aging, about some of the building’s features. “It’s exciting for the community.”

Gibson said the facility is 100 percent handicap accessible with safe parking for seniors. She the goal was to create a comfortable environment.

“We have a lounge area and a fire place because we wanted it to be welcoming. We didn’t want to have like an institutional-feel. We wanted our seniors to come in and feel free to come in when we’re open and stay until we leave,” said Gibson.

The Council on Aging offers a variety of services including home delivery meals, transportation, in-home care, insurance counseling, trips for seniors, nutrition education and more, she said.

“As baby boomers age, we work with them, we have public comment meetings just to see how we can help them improve their quality of life,” Gibson said.

Elected officials, U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Third District Congressman Evan Jenkins and Marshall University Coach Dan D’Antoni were also on hand to offer statements at Monday’s ceremony.
