I-77 re-opens after truck overturns in Kanawha County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A wreck involving a semi-trailer shut down Interstate 77 in Kanawha County for several hours Monday morning.

A tractor trailer hauling office furniture overturned near the overpass of the Eden’s Fork exit of I-77 just north of Charleston around 5:30 a.m.

“Both south-bound lanes were blocked and damage to the retaining wall caused both north-bound lanes to be closed also,” said Mike Oakley with the Kanawha County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. “The Department of Highways was on the scene and they are in the process of cleaning it up.”

Interstate traffic backed up for miles as law enforcement directed a detour down the off-ramp and back onto the interstate through the on-ramp on the opposite side of the highway The Department of Highways re-opened the road just before noon.

The driver reportedly swerved and over-corrected as he came back into the lane causing the truck to tip over. There were no other vehicles involved and the driver suffered minor injuries.
