Rod, Run and Doo Wop classic car show kicks off in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Hundreds of classic cars lined the Kanawha Boulevard Thursday during the first day of Charleston’s 10th Annual Rod, Run and Doo Wop car show that runs through Sunday.

“The cars get you here,” said car owner Charlie Morris of Belle. “They talk about the cars, but really it’s just seeing people you haven’t seen for a while.”

Morris is the owner of a 1932 red Roadster with a Chevrolet 350 v8 engine.

“I mean it’s just a simple car, like myself, but it’s a fun car,” he said. “I want something to get me there. I like to get from point A to point B.”

Kyle Stollings of Charleston is also a car owner. He said his black 1985 Chevrolet Camaro IROC is something he likes to show off because it means a lot to him.

“It’s a little bit unique in that in 1985, it was judged in several of the car magazines, judged as the ‘Best Handling Car Built in America.’ It beat the Corvette that year. It’s a nice road car,” said Stollings.

Stollings said he traded a 1973 Javelin Ford Mustang for his current vehicle, which he said was in rough shape for a while.

Most importantly, he said he loves coming to the show every year to see what other cars are on the street.

“A lot of creativity. A lot of engineering,” said Stollings. “It’s interesting to see what people take, a stock vehicle, and (what) they make out of it and their take on what it could or should’ve been when it was first built.”

The annual event is expected to attract nearly one thousand classic cars with people from all over the United States. There are vehicles from every era including some modern models.

More than 100 sponsors will also be on hand for the event. There will be concerts each night featuring country, rock and doo wop music.

The Kanawha Boulevard will be closed from Capitol Street to Ohio Avenue through Sunday.
