Doddridge County’s Devericks named AARP Scholar Athlete of the Week

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Garrett Devericks of Doddridge County High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 4.

A senior, Devericks is a 4.25 g.p.a. AP Honors student. He is a member of National Honor Society, serving as chapter president, and a Promise Scholarship qualifier. He has served as a class officer for four years and is an active member of the D.O.G.S. faith-based student club. As a junior, he earned All-Little Kanawha Conference Scholar Athlete honors and his school’s Scholar Athlete Award. He is the son of Todd and Birdie Devericks of Salem.

Devericks is starting quarterback/defensive back and team captain for Coach Bobby Burnside’s Bulldog football team. As a member of the Bulldogs’ 2014 WVSSAC football playoff team, he earned All-Little Kanawha Conference honors.

He has also helped the Bulldogs track and field program capture three consecutive WVSSAC Class A state boys team championships, earning podium finishes in the 110m Hurdles (3rd place) and 300m Hurdles (5th place) at the 2015 WVSSAC state track and field championships. Devericks is also a member of the varsity boys’ basketball team.

On a community level, Devericks is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in Doddridge County through his church and school. He is an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society, and a past recipient of the organization’s District Youth Volunteer Award. He also serves as a peer mentor/suicide prevention mentor with Doddridge County Schools and as a volunteer with Doddridge County youth sports programs.

Following graduation, Devericks plans to pursue a degree in Safety Management.

During the 2015 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. Nomination forms may be completed online by clicking here.
