State police make 2 arrests from August murder in Monroe County

UNION, W.Va. — Two people have been arrested in connection with the August stabbing death of a Monroe County man, state police said Friday.

The body of Gary Lester, 55, of Cashmere, was found on the floor of his home Aug. 26. A medical examiner’s report said he died of multiple stab wounds, investigators said.

Troopers secured arrest warrants Thursday for Gary Lee Byrd, II, 55, of Rich Creek, Va., and Rebecca Page, 30, of Bozoo, WV. Byrd is charged with murder, robbery and conspiracy. Page is charged with aiding and abetting murder after the fact, robbery and conspiracy.

Byrd is being held in a Virginia jail on separate charges. He’ll be extradited to Monroe County, troopers said. Page is in the Southern Regional Jail.

An extensive investigation and a number of leads led them to Byrd and Page, troopers said.
