Holgorsen absorbs blame for ‘forcing’ plays downfield

NORMAN, Okla. — Riddled by seven sacks and five turnovers, West Virginia’s offense wasn’t capable of holding serve in what became a one-sided shootout against Oklahoma.

Skyler Howard’s mostly miserable day included three interceptions (with a fourth negated by penalty) and lost two fumbles, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Yet Dana Holgorsen sought the blame for putting his junior quarterback in perilous circumstances.

“It comes down to their defense was better than me,” the coach said after a 44-24 loss. “I am the one calling the plays.

“I will tell you right now: I have coached against these guys for a long time, and if you start forcing things downfield it’s not going to turn out well.”
