Preston deputies investigate deadly weekend wreck; 2 killed and another person injured

INDEPENDENCE, W.Va. — Two people died and a third person was injured in a weekend accident in Preston County.

According to the Preston County Sheriff’s Department, a Subaru traveling south on Independence Road Friday about 6:15 p.m. ran off the edge of the road and struck a tree.

The driver, William Tonkin, Jr., 40, of Reedsville, and his front seat passenger Bobby Jo Bennett, 42, of Morgantown, died in the wreck, deputies said.

Johnna Goines, 27, of Kingwood, was a passenger in the back seat. She was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital for treatment.
