Casto murder case sent to grand jury Tuesday

WINFIELD, W.Va. — A Putnam County magistrate found cause to send the case of a Hurricane man accused of murder to a grand jury Tuesday.

Phillip Casto, 33, appeared for his preliminary hearing in Winfield. Casto is accused of fatally shooting Jennifer Evans at her Teays Valley townhouse last month. He was arrested days later near Boston.

Prosecutors focused on Evans’ cellphone Tuesday, which was found near her body. A text message from Evans to her husband allegedly read, “OMG, Phil showed up here.”

Evans and Casto apparently had had a prior relationship. Evans had sent Casto an email days earlier saying she had chosen to “work things out” with her husband, and asking Casto not to contact her again.
