Tuesday Takeaways: Defense is leading the Herd

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall is under the lights this Friday against a much-improved Southern Miss team. But before gearing up for the Golden Eagles, here’s a few final thoughts on the 27-7 win over Old Dominion.

Dominant “D”
ODU picked up junk yards at the end of the game. In fact more than half of its total offense came on the final three drives. The defense has been the strength of the team all season and it may actually be getting better with players such as Ryan Bee stepping up.

Getting backs healthy
If Marshall can get its running backs healthy, opposing defensive coordinators will have a tough time preparing for the Herd. Tony Pittman shouldered the load for Marshall the past two games (with Devon Johnson sidelined with injury), proving he has what it takes to be a feature back, eventually. A healthy Johnson and Remi Watson with the addition of Pittman can really help open up the secondary for freshman quarterback Chase Litton.

Golden Eagles no longer grounded
Southern Miss, no longer the laughingstock of the league, averages 40.2 points and Nick Mullens has thrown for 300 yards in four of his five games this season. Southern Miss has the second-best passing attack in C-USA and the conference’s top offense at 514.2 yards per game.
