MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Hours after the West Virginia basketball team wrapped up its preseason scrimmage Saturday night, guard Teyvon Myers was cited for marijuana possession on University Avenue, according to a Dominion Post report.
Myers, the nation’s top junior college scorer last season at Williston State (N.D.) College, is currently allowed to practice with the Mountaineers though the school has not confirmed his NCAA eligibility for the regular season that begins Nov.13.
The 21-year-old Myers reportedly was cited for misdemeanor possession around 1 a.m. Sunday, about four hours after he produced two points and five rebounds during the intrasquad scrimmage in the WVU Coliseum.
In West Virginia, penalties for marijuana possession include a fine of up to $1,000 and 90 days to six months in jail. However judges typically levy a lesser fine and give the offender a chance to have the charge dismissed upon completion of a six-month probationary period.
While Bob Huggins can mete out whatever internal punishment he chooses, the citation alone is unlikely to impact Myers’ playing status from a school perspective. After all, four football players—safety Dravon Henry, offensive lineman Yodny Cajuste, linebacker Xavier Preston and defensive lineman Jaleel Fields—were cited for marijuana possession inside a campus residence hall last January, and none were prohibited from playing in last September’s season opener.
