State HEPC to approve new Marshall president next month

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The state Higher Education Policy Commission is expected to approve the next Marshall University president Dr. Jerome Gilbert at its meeting next month.

The meeting is scheduled for Nov. 20.

Gilbert, the former provost and executive vice president of Mississippi State University, was chosen last week to serve as the 37th president.

“It’s very exciting,” said state HEPC Chancellor Paul Hill. “He has some great ideas in mind for assisting students, helping recruit, building research. A lot of things he’s mentioned, I think, thus far, is really exciting for the university and for the whole state.”

Marshall has been searching for a president since the late Dr. Stephen Kopp died of a heart attack in December 2014, so Hill said the announcement couldn’t have come at a better time.

“Having an institution like Marshall lose a president, as (what) occurred last year, it’s extremely rewarding to know that we have a new strong president coming on board that will lead the university into the next few years,” he said.

Gilbert was one of three candidates to make visits this month to both the Huntington and South Charleston campuses before he was offered the position by the university’s Board of Governors.

Along with Marshall, Hill said two other institutions including Shepard University and West Liberty University are also nearing completion of their presidential searches.

“We may have three (to complete their searches this year), but certainly we have one that is already on board, so we’re excited,” Hill said.

Gilbert is expected to join Marshall on January 1, 2016.
