Manchin supports Obama limited ground move in Syria

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Joe Manchin said Wednesday on MetroNews “Talkline” he supports President Barack Obama’s move to put 50-member special operations force on the ground in Syria.

“I don’t like any of it,” Manchin said. “We’re sucked into this thing. It’s a horrible situation but I believe what they’ve done now, bringing in these 50 people, I can understand and I support that. I don’t support bringing in any other people.”

The U.S. is already participating in air strikes in the Kurdish-controlled areas of Syria to help fight against ISIS. Putting special ops on the ground can help make sure those strikes are working properly, Manchin said.

“To be more effective you’ve got to have United States special ops making sure that the information, making sure the technology being used is accurate and we reduce collateral damage to innocent people,” he said.

Manchin participated in a 90-minute security briefing Tuesday night.

“It’s so complicated. It’s a very fluid moving target. It’s unbelievable what’s going on over there,” Manchin said.

Manchin said he wants to know the “end game.”

“What are going to get out of the whole thing?”
