Man killed by deputies serving warrants in Morgantown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A man armed with a shotgun was shot and killed by Monongalia County sheriff’s deputies during an armed robbery investigation Thursday.

The shooting occurred after Monongalia County sheriff’s deputies went to 1043 Charles Ave. to serve search and arrest warrants related to a first-degree armed robbery, said Morgantown police chief Ed Preston.

People at the home reportedly tried to keep deputies from entering. Deputies fired on a man who was armed with a shotgun.

The man also was armed with a handgun at the time of the shooting, police said.

“Emergency medical personnel were staged in the immediate area because of the serious nature of the crimes involved and were able to immediately start emergency medical treatment,” Preston said.

The armed man, whose name was not released, was was pronounced dead at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

A Morgantown police release said no further updates would be released until Thursday afternoon “because of the complexity of this investigation.”
