Putnam County to get a jump start on honoring veterans

WINFIELD, W.Va. — Putnam County will honor local veterans on Sunday at the courthouse in Winfield.  It’s the eighth annual Veterans Appreciation Day for the county. It’s an even spearheaded by Putnam County Commissioner Joe Haynes.

“We do it the Sunday before Veterans Day because a lot of vets have to work on Veterans Day,” said Haynes.

Haynes said the event is near and dear to his heart and grows every year.  He said he came up with the idea when considering how best to thank vets in the Putnam County community.  The idea of a parade was suggested, but Haynes believed there were enough parades. He said that’s why this ceremony is different.

“We have guest speakers. We get the involvement of the American Legion and the Marine Corps League,” he said. “We just do some tributes to veterans.”

Haynes said he hopes everyone in the county will turn out for the ceremony.  Those attending can bring lawn chairs to be part of the event which is Sunday at 2 p.m.
