Former Pennsylvania teacher sentenced in federal court a year after attempting to solicit a minor

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A former teacher from Pennsylvania has been sentenced in federal court a year after traveling to Harrison County to solicit a minor.

Daniel S. McGarvey, 45, from Uniontown, Pennsylvania, was sentenced Wednesday to 46 months in prison after he was arrested in Bridgeport with the intent to engage in sexual conduct with a minor.

McGarvey used internet-based websites and text messaging to communicate with a minor female who he believed to be 15 years old.

In October 2014, he traveled to Bridgeport, West Virginia for the purpose of engaging in sexual conduct with the aforementioned minor female.

McGarvey pleaded guilty in April to one count of Travel with Intent to Engage in Illicit Sexual Conduct following an investigation by the Bridgeport Police Department and the West Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Vogrin prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley presided.
