Lunching with Braun: West Virginia’s run-game gains ‘credit to Holgorsen’

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — While West Virginia has been trending toward the running game all season, the 12-to-51 pass-to-run ratio represented an eye-popping pendulum swing.

The Lunch asked former three-year starter Jeff Braun if he ever anticipated the Mountaineers becoming such a ground-and-pound offense:

“No, and I never thought I would see power, never thought I would see isos, never thought I would see tight ends and fullbacks in the same formation, but that’s what we’re seeing this year,” Braun said. “That’s a credit to Coach Holgorsen. He’s adapting to his personnel and that’s the sign of a good football coach.

“You have to adapt to where your strengths are. They have a decent offensive line and they’re jelling right now at the end of the season. They’ve got a quality fullback/tight end combo and they’ve got a great running back with (Wendell) Smallwood.”

Check out today’s the Gold & Blue Lunch video for Braun’s always insightful breakdowns of the offensive line play, and a peek at West Virginia’s most likely bowl destinations.
