Rally falls flat at end for WVU women in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — After West Virginia erased a 17-point halftime deficit, Gonzaga’s Laura Stockton led an 8-0 closing run that lifted the Bulldogs to a 62-57 win Sunday at the Hall of Fame Challenge.

Bria Holmes scored a game-high 19 points, all in the second half, including a 3 that staked West Virginia (2-1) to a 57-54 lead with 3:15 left. From there the Mountaineers missed their final five shots and committed a costly turnover.

The daughter of NBA legend John Stockton scored 14 points for Gonzaga (3-1), which also got 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench from Jill Barta.

“The outcome is disappointing after we displayed great effort and fought back in the third quarter,” said West Virginia coach Mike Carey.

Lanay Montgomery finished with seven points and 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers, who were outscored 19-8 at the free-throw line.

Gonzaga, which led 35-18 at the half, committed only 12 fouls in the game compared to WVU’s 25.

West Virginia remains in Spokane to face USC on Monday and Grand Canyon on Tuesday.
