Busy day of travel expected Wednesday on WV Turnpike

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — What is traditionally one of the busiest travel days of the year is expected to hit the WV turnpike particularly hard Wednesday, according to Turnpike GM Greg Barr.

Barr said the Wednesday before Thanksgiving always sees heavy volume, and this year should be no exception.

“Wednesday’s before Thanksgiving are one of the busiest days to travel; obviously if people could leave sooner than that they’re better off as far as avoiding traffic congestion, not only on the turnpike but all over the country.”

Barr expected to see a slight increase in travel, in part because of the low gas prices.

“I think the lower gas prices and a somewhat stronger economy will probably have an increase for sure,” he said. “I would guess maybe as much as two or three percent over last year.”

Gas prices are down about 89 cents from a year ago, according to Barr. He said Sunday when people come home from the holiday can be even more of a busy travel day.

“At least people stretch out when they go down at different times of the day. On Sunday, it seems like everybody comes back about the same time, and it really creates congestion,” Barr explained.

Barr said the worst of the traffic on the WV Turnpike is generally from 10:30 a.m. to about 6 p.m., and that signs would be up to warn people.
