SPOKANE, Wash. – The West Virginia women’s basketball team cruised to a 68-50 victory over Grand Canyon late Tuesday night to salvage a win at the Hall of Fame Challenge and give coach Mike Carey his 300th career victory with the program.
“I’ve always said that you can’t achieve success without great players, coaches and staff,” said Carey, a Clarksburg native who has produced a 300-163 record (.648) in 15 seasons at West Virginia.
“Without these individuals, 300 wins would not have been possible. We still need to improve our performance after tonight’s win, but it’s always good to get a victory.”
The Mountaineers (3-2), after suffering back-to-back losses to Gonzaga and USC, jumped out to an eight-point lead in the first quarter against Grand Canyon (2-4) and led 28-14 at halftime.
Carey is now two victories away from surpassing Kittie Blakemore (301) as the program’s all-time wins leader.
Bria Holmes scored 14 points and has now scored 1,504 points in her career, tied with Jenny Hillen for 10th all-time on the program’s list.
