Charleston businesses ‘light up’ for holiday shopping season

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Businesses and organizations in Charleston will be turning their holiday lights on Thanksgiving Day in an effort to enhance the shopping experience this season.

“Light Up Charleston,” organized by the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Charleston Area Alliance, Charleston Main Streets and the Kanawha City Community Association, will last through Jan. 2.

“When you’re downtown, it’s just more enjoyable,” said CVB President and CEO Alisa Bailey. “The kids like it, everyone gets into the mood and what we want to do is get everyone in the mood to spend money.”

Bailey said the effort focuses on drawing more customers into the stores while also making the city more attractive during the holidays.

“Holiday lights is the number one thing people look for because it’s a different kind of experience. Everyone knows that. Look how popular the Festival of Lights is in Wheeling, so we really want to emulate that,” she said.

Stores were provided with strands of LED lights that will also save energy, Bailey said.

“They’re beautiful. You can see them at the downtown triangle at Lee Street and Capital Street. They almost look like pine cones, but they’re very energy efficient,” she said.

The CVB will continue to sell lights to community partners for $15 per 17-foot strand. For more information, call (304)-344-5075.
