Holmes’ 18 helps WVU turn back Yale in tournament finale

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Bria Holmes scored 18 points in a home-state return, Teana Muldrow added 16 and West Virginia staved off Yale’s late charge for a 70-60 victory in the final game of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge on Sunday.

West Virginia (4-2) gave coach Mike Carey his 301st victory, tying Kittie Blakemore as the program’s all-time wins leader.

Once down 15 in the second half, Yale (4-3) got 12 fourth-quarter points from guard Whitney Wyckoff and drew within 63-60 at the 1:04 mark. But then Holmes found Lanay Montgomery for a layup to begin WVU’s 7-0 closing run.

“I liked the way we closed out the game, but we still need to work on rebounding,” said Carey.

Holmes, the New Haven native, averaged 19.5 points in four tournament games. Montgomery added 12 points after missing the majority of the first half due to foul trouble.
