More W.Va. consumers turn to digital shopping this holiday season

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The biggest holiday shopping weekend of the year ended on a high note, according to the West Virginia Retailers Association.

WVRA President and CEO Bridget Lambert told MetroNews the average spending per person in West Virginia was about $299. Nearly 75 percent of that cost was spent on gifts.

Many national reports showed online shopping was favored over camping out at stores on Black Friday.

About 39 percent of shoppers chose to get their deals online, Lambert said.

“We’re changing,” said Lambert about the digital age. “I think retailers are changing. The consumers are changing. I’m not sure that it hurts them. You can access their online store and order items, so it’s a benefit, a win-win, for retailers and shoppers.”

Lambert said they anticipated lower consumer spending before the weekend began due to the large amount of layoffs in the coal industry. She said many of those folks ended up shopping anyway.

“I actually think they really looked at all of the sales and the bargains that were available. Probably a lot of them went out this weekend to get more bang for the money they do have in their household,” she said.

Heavy traffic is also expected on apps and websites this Cyber Monday.
